After making noise within the bruk scene and wider bass circles with their 2023 collaboration single ‘A Bruk Ting’ on Phuture Shock Musik, Bristol-based producer Sentinel 793, alongside Bristolian emcee T. Relly, wheel up the track and place it in the very capable hands of bass heavyweight J: Kenzo, who delivers two sizzling new reworks of the track, primed for another round of dancefloor damage into the coming year.
Originally from Kent, J: Kenzo is well reputed for his dark and militant, bass-heavy sound, particularly in the fields of dubstep and Drum & Bass. Consistently at the vanguard of underground bass music; since his 2007 breakthrough, the English producer/DJ has racked up a slew of releases on pioneering labels such as Tempa and Metalheadz, through to Roska’s Kicks & Snares, Dub Police, and his own imprint, Artikal Music.
Tailored for Phuture Shock’s limited dubplate series; with this double-sided remix package of ‘A Bruk Ting’, Kenzo pulls off two dynamic takes on the original, that bears the hallmarks of his low end-fuelled sound, yet with a loose bruk twist, which will appeal to all manner of bass heads.
First up, and slapped on the A-side is the ‘Bruk & Dub’ mix, where J: Kenzo flips the drums into a halftime swung-out tempo, bristling with crispy hi-hats designed to get heads nodding, before a menacing, dark UKG-style b-line thrusts the track into cavernous realms; leaving much space for T. Relly’s towering vocals to hit hard in all the right places. While side B’s ‘Shake A Leg’ mix, finds Kenzo shifting the beats up a gear, rebuilding the track into a rowdy bruk workout; where the vox run riot over an up-tempo collision of frisky broken beats and plunging basslines, flanked by scurrying congas, and some nifty swipes of Sentinel 793’s scrappy keyboard riff from the original track.
