about

Following recent sonic journeys via Cape Town and Brussels, Bristol’s Phuture Shock Musik returns to home soil with the latest release in its limited dubplate series - a single named ‘A Bruk Ting’ - which sees on-form Bristol-based producer Sentinel 793 link up with local stalwart MC T. Relly.

Another welcome debutant to the PSM family, Sentinel 793 has been turning heads within the broken beat scene and wider bass music circles in recent times with his heavy, off-centre take on the “bruk” sound. Still a relatively young project, the producer, DJ and graffiti artist has already dropped a clutch of self-releases via his own Universal Magnetic imprint and also a previous offering on London label Seagrave within the last 18 months. To date, his work has amassed support right across the board ranging from the reputed likes of BBC 6 Music’s Tom Ravenscroft and Ashley Beedle to Om Unit and Jossy Mitsu, among others. Prior to his work under the Sentinel 793 moniker, the producer has also recorded music under multiple guises over the years - including Benjamin One and Water Mostly – with each project exploring a gamut of styles from avant-hip hop to footwork .

Teaming up with Sentinel 793 and handling vocal duties for “A Bruk Ting” is T. Relly aka Bristol Blitz, a seasoned MC who is highly respected and long established within Bristol’s hip hop scene. Primarily known for his hip hop roots, the Bristol native is however no stranger to rhyming over different genres or collaborations; such as 2018’s ‘Let Them Know’ LP with DJ Rogue, and his latest work as one half of electro-rap duo Ree-Vo, alongside producer Andy Spaceland. Taking his hand to the syncopated sounds of bruk on this very project, Relly once again displays his lyrical prowess on the mic and versatility to ride any kind of rhythm that comes his way.

Comprised of the main vocal mix and the instrumental on a 10” pressing, ‘A Bruk Ting’ is a rugged dancefloor cut that pays homage to Bristol’s rich sound system culture derived from Jamaica and its key element of dubplate exclusivity, whilst also hailing up the city’s own small but simmering bruk movement and the worldwide scene as a whole. On the A-Side is the vocal version of ‘A Bruk Ting’, where Relly swiftly launches into soundclash mode; spittin’ his assured, ragga-flecked bars over Sentinel 793’s minimalist, jerky production made up of crisp, foot-flinging drum work and rumbling junglist-style bass; replete with extra-terrestrial keyboard licks and pattering congas. While on the flipside lays the instrumental which works just as cool and deadly in its raw form in contrast to the anthemic vocal flip.
